Hi I’m Sandy , author of “Meet the Farties”.
I love to write songs, stories and love to dance. I grew up on a farm near Listowel Ontario, Canada. I guess I needed something exciting to do, so when I was in a performing mood, I would serenade the cows, horses, and any other animal that might come along.
After high school I went off to hairdressing school. I love to create different hairdo’s for my customers. During that time I always told jokes and kept my clients laughing. From that moment on, I knew someday, I would do something that involved making people laugh. I find funny things in everyday life and enjoy turning them into amusing stories.
After owning my own hairdressing salon for 25 years, I decided it was time to do something else. I still love hairdressing and continue to keep my family from looking like shaggy dogs but it was time to start a new career. My youngest daughter starting working for a womens’ fitness club called “Curves”.
Jennifer called and said, “Mom, you will love this fitness workout, it is only 30 seconds”! “Well, I said, I’m in”! As it turns out, it was 30 seconds on each workout machine, but it’s still a good workout! Well, as I started to get my own curves back, I decided to look into owning the business. In the next two and a half years, my daughters and I owned and operated 12 Curves! We ran them for 8 years and then sold them. During that time, I would hoot and holler in the center of the circle of fitness, sing my songs, tell jokes and the members seemed to love it. Again, I was in my glory laughing and having fun.
After the time we spent with Curves, my husband and I got involved in another business which occupied more of his time which allowed me to pursue more of my creative side including writing music, plays and my eventually, first book “Meet the Farties”.
As I mentioned, I had written songs and stories all my life as a hobby. Now it felt right to pursue my dream of writing. As I was finishing up working at Curves, I began writing a musical comedy for the theatre.
It is called “More Before Play”. It’s a musical about four women and their journey at different ages, stages and men in their lives. Each one realizes they want “more” out of life, whatever their “more” is; more appreciation, more fulfillment, more education, more attention and just more fun!
I wrote seventeen songs for this musical and there is something for all women and men of all ages, a chance to see the funny side of our life’s journey.
You can hear one of the songs “Let’s Fly” by clicking here “Let’s Fly”. It is the last song before the intermission. My good friends, two local artists, Agnes and Mary asked to record it for their third CD release. Agnes wrote the music and Mary chose to sing it as a ballad and it is beautiful.
If it were to be performed in my musical, I would change it to a very strong uplifting soul, anthem-like song to really get the energy up for the audience. I want everyone to know we all can “FLY”. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
I was also fortunate to win an award down in Nashville for a “comedy” song of the month called “Wrinkles”.
I really had a blast writing this musical and I have many more ideas for other plays, “BUT” the little “BUTT” Family came along and sent me flying!!! LOL. Do you think there will be funny Farties Songs??? You bet your “BUTT” there will be! I will be writing Funny Fartie songs to go with the little “BUTT” Family for the kids to sing along to. And even some funky Fartie dance moves for the children to dance to.
I enjoy all kinds of music and would like to include a song or two for you guys to enjoy as I chat with you. Click here to listen to “Could We Be Lonely Together” – one of my country ballads that I sent to Nashville. They made a demo for me and sent it back. Hope you like it.
